Is it made in the U.S.A.?

This may be useful to know when grocery shopping, if it's a concern to you. With current problems with products from China...including dog/cat food, many people are afraid of China-made "black hearted goods". Can you differentiate which one is made in Taiwan or China? If the first 3 digits of the barcode are 690, 691 or 692, the product is MADE IN CHINA. 471 is Made in Taiwan . This is our right to know, but the government and related departments never educate the public, therefore we have to RESCUE ourselves. Nowadays, businessmen know that consumers do not prefer products "MADE IN CHINA ", so they don't always show from which country it is made/grown. However, you may now refer to the barcode, remember if the first 3 digits are:
690-692 … then it is MADE IN CHINA .

00 - 09 … USA & CANADA

30 - 37... FRANCE

40 - 44 … GERMANY

47 ... Taiwan

49 … JAPAN

50 … UK

BUY USA by watching for "0" at the beginning of the number. We need every boost we can get!
Check out numerous products by clicking on the link below! Go U.S.A.!

I Found GREEN HORNED CATERPILLARS in my Garden Today!

I have lived in Las Vegas since 1985 and I have always loved to garden. Each year I grow basil, tomatoes and peppers. I have tried cucumbers, squash and a variety of other veggies without as much luck as tomatoes and peppers.
My tomato crop is over for this year, but I always have peppers (Anaheim chili peppers, jalapeno, habenero etc.) that grow into the late fall. I noticed this morning that my pepper plants were eaten on. I couldn't believe it because I just watered them yesterday and didn't notice anything unusual.
Upon closer inspection and much to my dismay, I pulled 9 huge green horned caterpillars off of my plants. Never in all of my years of gardening in Las Vegas have I come across such a large amount of caterpillars on my plants. In years past I have had a caterpillar or two...but never 9!!!!

I spoke with my mom in Minnesota and she said that there is an usual amount of activity in Minnesota with the green horned caterpillars as well.

Tomato Horn worm - are 3-4" long green caterpillars with diagonal lines on sides, prominent horn on rear end. Eat foliage and may take bites out of green fruit. Tomato horn worms are the larvae of 2 large moths: the Hawk moth and the Sphinx moth and overwinter in the soil in the pupal stage. Adult moths appear in late spring and lay single, pearl colored eggs on the undersides of plant leaves that hatch in about a week. Larvae feed on foliage for about a month before they enter the soil and pupate. They can be difficult to spot as coloring matches plant. Look for them on the undersides of leaf-stripped branches. They can easily be hand-picked and destroyed or if infestation is severe, use
Bt (Bacillius thuringiensis) dust or liquid (organic).
Braconid wasps will kill these caterpillars by implanting rice-like eggs on their backs.
It's great to garden, if you have kids it is a wonderful to work on garden projects with them and to watch the fruit and vegetables grow is spectacular. To sit down for a meal and eat your own home grown food is another perk in the process.

Swine Flu Shot Protection?

Swine flu shot protection? Maybe by Thanksgiving By MIKE STOBBE,

ATLANTA -It will likely be Thanksgiving before a significant number of Americans who get the swine flu vaccine are protected, health officials said Monday.

Roughly 50 million doses of vaccine are expected to be available by mid-October. But for those who get initial doses right away, that will only mark the beginning of a vaccination process that will take five or more weeks.

Here's why: Health officials believe most people will need two shots, spaced three weeks apart, and it will take a week or two after the second dose before immunity kicks in. That's five or six weeks in all.

That means large numbers of Americans won't be fully immunized until Thanksgiving, said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, speaking to reporters in Atlanta.
Health officials don't really know if that's good or bad news. Since it was first reported in April, swine flu has turned out to be not much more dangerous than seasonal flu, overall. Government experts say it may soon become just another variety of the flu, and perhaps will conform to the seasonal flu calendar — vaccinated against in the fall, suffered through every winter.
But swine flu cases have persisted through this summer, especially in camps and other places where kids congregate. It's possible they will explode not long after kids return to schools and colleges this fall.

"Hopefully we will have a mild presentation this fall" with limited cases of serious illness and few deaths, Sebelius said during a visit to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Clinical trials started just this month to evaluate the new vaccine's safety and effectiveness, and the first substantial set of results is not expected until next month. Health officials presume there will be a fall campaign to encourage people to get swine flu vaccinations that will be called off only if something unexpected and alarming emerges in the clinical trials, CDC spokespeople said.

Also Monday, the White House released a report from the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology that assessed the nation's swine flu preparations. The panel predicted 20 to 40 percent of the U.S. population will suffer swine flu symptoms this fall, and about half will get sick enough to go to the doctor.

The panel also estimated the virus will cause between 30,000 and 90,000 deaths, concentrated among children and young adults. Seasonal flu, in contrast, kills an estimated 36,000 people every year.

The panel also recommended that vaccine manufacturers step up production so at least 40 million doses are available by mid-September to start immunizing children and others at higher risk of serious swine flu complications.

However, vaccine makers have said they've had trouble producing large quantities of doses as quickly as was originally hoped.

Stay Healthy - Airconditioners and Cars

Please pay attention to this helpful information and STAY Healthy!!!!
Please do not turn on A/C as soon as you enter the car on a HOT day. Open the windows first upon entering your car to let the car air out for a bit, and then turn on the air-conditioning.
Here's why: According to research, the car dashboard, upholstery, air freshener emit Benzene, a cancer-causing toxin (carcinogen - take time to observe the smell of heated plastic in your car). In addition to causing cancer, Benzene poisons your bones, causes anemia and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure may cause Leukemia, increasing the risk of cancer. May also cause miscarriage. Acceptable Benzene level indoors is 50 mg per sq. ft. A car parked indoors with windows closed will contain 400-800 mg of Benzene. If parked outdoors under the sun at a temperature above 60 degrees F (10 degrees C), the Benzene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg, 40 times the acceptable level. People who get into the car, keeping windows closed will inevitably inhale, in quick succession, excessive amounts of the toxin. Benzene is a toxin that affects your kidneys and liver. What's worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to expel this toxic stuff.
So friends, please open the windows and door of your car - give time for interior to air out - dispel the deadly stuff - before and particularly before you turn on the air conditioner to circulate and get a big blast of this stuff!!

Pending Homes Sales are up for 5th Straight Month

QUESTIONS ON TODAY'S MARKET ACTIVITY? Follow me!

August 5, 2009-

Pending home sales are up for the fifth consecutive month, the first time in six years for such a streak, according to the National Association of Realtors®.
The Pending Home Sales Index, a forward-looking indicator based on contracts signed in June, rose 3.6% to 94.6 from an upwardly revised reading of 91.3 in May, and is 6.7% above June 2008 when it was 88.7. The last time there were five consecutive monthly gains was in July 2003.
Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said a combination of positive market factors is fueling the gains. “Historically low mortgage interest rates, affordable home prices and large selection are encouraging buyers who’ve been on the sidelines. Activity has been consistently much stronger for lower priced homes,” he said. ”Because it may take as long as two months to close on a home after signing a contract, first-time buyers must act fairly soon to take advantage of the $8,000 tax credit because they must close on the sale by November 30.”
The Pending Home Sales Index in the Northeast rose 0.4% to 81.2 in June and is 5.8% above a year ago. In the Midwest the index increased 0.8% to 89.9 and is 11.6% above June 2008. The index in the South jumped 7.1% to 100.7 in June and is 8.9% higher than a year ago. In the West the index rose 2.9% to 100.4 but is 0.2% below June 2008.
NAR President Charles McMillan, a broker with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Dallas-Fort Worth, is hopeful that a recently elevated level of contract cancellations will ease. “Last month, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae clarified that appraisals should be done by professionals with clear local expertise,” he said. “This should mitigate the situation of many valuations done by out-of-area appraisers coming in below the price negotiated between buyers and sellers. Hopefully, in the months ahead, we’ll see an even closer relationship between contract activity and closed transactions.” McMillan said NAR is continuing to press the appraisal issue. “We have asked Congress and the Federal Housing Finance Agency to immediately implement an 18-month moratorium on the new appraisal rules to further address unintended consequences of the new guidelines,” he said.
NAR’s Housing Affordability Index (HAI) remains very favorable. The affordability index stood at 159.2 in July, down from record peaks in recent months but it remains 36.6 percentage points above a year ago. Under these conditions the typical family would devote 15.7% of gross income to mortgage principal and interest, well below the standard allowance of 25%. The HAI is a broad measure of housing affordability using consistent values and assumptions over time, which examines the relationship between home prices, mortgage interest rates and family income.
“A monthly rise in home prices and somewhat higher mortgage interest rates led to a modest decline in affordability in June, but it was still the sixth highest index on record dating back to 1970,” Yun said. “Because housing is so affordable in today’s market, job security and the first-time buyer tax credit are bigger factors in influencing home sales.”
A median-income family, earning $60,700, could afford a home costing $289,100 in June with a 20% downpayment, assuming 25% of gross income is devoted to mortgage principal and interest. Affordability conditions for first-time buyers with the same income and small downpayments are roughly 80% of what a median-income family can afford. The affordable price was much higher than the median existing single-family home price in June, which was $181,600.
Yun expects existing-home sales to gradually rise over the balance of the year, with conditions varying around the country. “It appears home sales are on a sounder footing and inventory is gradually being absorbed.”
